Understanding plastic molds and injection molds

All plastic products used and produced daily are made from injection molds. Each type of product has different requirements for the size, shape, and structure of the mold.

Plastic molds are used to shape plastic products, including multiple assembled parts. Liquid plastic is injected into the mold, cooled, and then shaped according to the desired product requirements before being ejected from the mold.

Plastic molds play a crucial role in the entire system of machinery used in plastic product manufacturing. Precise mold structures and specifications ensure smooth and efficient operation of the machinery, resulting in high-quality plastic products.

Designing plastic molds

Designing and manufacturing plastic molds require expertise and technical skills. The design of plastic molds is composed of various detailed components, such as mold shell design, core mold details, and mold components. Therefore, the mold design process must be extremely accurate.

The design should provide complete details of each required production item, such as angles, dimensions, cross-sections, and tolerances that meet technical requirements.

Manufacturing plastic molds

To create a high-quality plastic mold with a precision of up to 1/100mm, the mold must undergo a strict manufacturing process.

Different types of high-strength steel materials are primarily used to make molds, ensuring good durability and the ability to withstand forces, guaranteeing a smooth and continuous injection molding process.

After the steel blocks are milled and cut, they produce metal parts with corresponding dimensions and shapes according to the requirements. These parts are then further processed to create the desired mold details, ensuring high precision according to the requirements.

The mold is produced in two parts: one part consists of multiple components and parts, while the other part is drilled at precise positions to accommodate the corresponding components. These two parts are then assembled to form the complete mold shape when plastic is injected.

After the mold is created, the surface roughness removal process is carried out. This step is crucial in transforming the steel block into a complete mold.

CNC machines controlled by computers are used to carry out the machining process. During this process, the steel block is gradually worn away to create the shape of each component. The CNC machine is also used to create copper electrodes that perfectly match the desired plastic parts the company wants to produce.

After the copper electrodes are smoothed, the electroplating process begins. Prior to that, the electrodes are placed in contact with a machine underneath. Then, a high-intensity electric current runs through the copper electrodes, and after the printing process onto the mold, the desired shape will be obtained on that half of the mold.

After the completion of mold manufacturing, the polishing process is performed to remove any rough surfaces. This helps enhance the gloss, brightness, and quality of the finished mold.

In addition to the manufacturing process, an engraving step is required to engrave reverse characters inside the mold to print labels and the company’s brand on the plastic product. After the plastic product is cast and ejected, we will have clear and raised characters on the product surface, providing unique features and high-quality for the product.
